Build Your Vocabulary Playing Scrabble

Scrabble is a great educational word building game that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. in which two to four players score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a game board with a 15-by-15 grid.   It can be likened to building a crossword puzzle grid from scratch, without having the clues.

Players have to place words across and down on the board grid, as they are created by a crossword setter. They have to be based on the seven letters they have taken and the words already on the board.

Scrabbles caters for beginner and advanced vocabularies.  This is due to the size of the board and the number of tiles each player can take with each turn.  The words tend to be short, one or two syllables.  Players always have a big incentive to “get their Seven out”, making a word out of all their letters in a single turn, and receive an extra 50 points.

The main rule that all players must adhere to is all words used must appear in a standard dictionary.  You will learn very quickly when a word isn’t word via the feedback of your fellow players!

A popular intergenerational game

Playing Scrabble has many benefits for people of all ages. All my grandparents were all avid players.  I have fond memories of the good times I spent playing with them.  It provided a great way me to learn new words and my grandparents to impart their knowledge.  This led to further spelling challenges with more sesquipedalian (polysyllabic) words that wouldn’t fit on the Scrabble board

Older people can also reap the health benefits of playing Scrabble.  Using the same skills helps them to keep their brains and minds active, which can prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s and dementia.  Scrabble is a word puzzle game where everyone is a winner!
