Solving Codewords on a Cruise

It was a bright morning at Station Pier in Melbourne, as I stepped onto the bustling deck of the Spirit of the Bay of Islands, bound for Auckland, my bags light but my spirits lighter. The cruise promised glittering blue seas, stunning scenery and fascinating sightseeing, with plenty of R & R – but what had really caught my eye was the ship’s inaugural Clue Detective’s Codeword Challenge, a puzzle competition for passengers keen to test their wits whilst enjoying the ocean breeze. Solving codewords on a cruise certainly seemed to me to be an innovative concept which I couldn’t wait to explore.

Solving Codeword Puzzles : More Than Just a Pastime

On the first afternoon at sea, after a quick swim and a cheeky cocktail, I made my way to the ship’s lounge. The Codeword Challenge table was already drawing a lively crowd. Each table had a grid of blank squares, the clues cryptic and cunning. The aim: to fill in the codeword using logic, deduction, and teamwork. Each number on the grid corresponded to a unique letter, but it was up to us to crack the code.

Friendship on the High Seas

I found myself teamed up with a crew of eager passengers: Grace, a fellow Melburnian, a self-confessed cruciverbalist; Tony, a retired teacher from London with a quick wit; and June from Sydney, an avid traveller whose stories from past cruises kept us entertained as we puzzled together. We sat with our codeword grid, pencils ready, the ship gently rocking beneath us.

Solving the Puzzle

The key to the codeword, we quickly realised, was collaboration. Grace suggested a hypothesis with “E” being the most common letter. Tony pointed out that “T” and “A” could be close by, and then June spotted  two words indicating this exact pattern.  We were off and running! Every time we filled in a word, the excitement grew – it was like striking gold!

Life Aboard the Cruise

Between codeword sessions, we lounged by the pool, tried the seafood buffet, and danced under the stars on the open deck. Each day brought fresh puzzles, new friendships, and a growing sense of camaraderie. Evenings were spent swapping stories at the bar, comparing notes on the trickiest grids, and planning the next day’s strategy.

A Whimsical Journey Across the Waves With Words

On the last night at sea, the Codeword Challenge reached its climax. All the teams gathered in the grand ballroom, the tables laid with crisp linen and the air abuzz with anticipation. The final puzzle was the trickiest yet, but our days of practice paid off – we worked as a team, filling in the last blank square just as the band struck up a lively tune.

We didn’t win the grand prize (that honour went to a group of high school students from Adelaide), but as the cruise ship sailed back towards the coast, we agreed that the real treasure had been the laughter, the teamwork, and the adventure of solving a codeword puzzle together on the open sea.

Puzzles Solved and Memories Made

As I disembarked back in Melbourne, fully rested and relaxed, I tucked a copy of our completed codeword grid into my pocket. The cruise had given me more than just a holiday – it had given me new mates, fond memories, and a love for puzzles that would outlast even the longest voyage.
