How To Solve Codewords

When solving a codeword the first time, the first thing you need to be aware of, is that your challenge is to study the numerical patterns in the grid, and using your literacy and logic skills, crack the inbuilt code and spell out all the words.

  • Codewords are crosswords without written clues.

  • You are provided with a grid, and each square contains a number 1 to 26 (ie. the letters of the alphabet).

  • Unlike crossword  that have written clues, the clues for codewords simply letters to match numbers. You are given a small number of letters (usually one or three) to start you off.  For example, W might be 17 and T might be 7.

Tips and tricks for solving codewords

Solving codewords is all about using your knowledge of the English language, observation and (often) some inspired guesswork.

    li
  • Double numbers that represent double letters eg. TT, BB, DD, EE, FF, GG, LL, OO.li
  • The letter S will often appear at the end of a word and act as a connecting letter for words that are in the plural.
    li
  • Look out for the same numerical patterns appearing within the grid that represent common letter combinations, for example, TH, ING and LY.

Sometimes solving codewords, is about trial and error, guesswork and creative deduction.  However, this is all part of the challenge.  You can have lots of fun experimenting with different letter combinations.  You will soon see if a word/s doesn’t look right.  If this is the case, just take the letter out, or you can press Revert to start again.

If you get stuck, it is perfectly okay to use the Reveal a Letter button.  It’s far better to solve the puzzle and learn some new words than give up on it. |
